Anointing of the Sick

"A Sacrament of Healing, Strength, and Comfort."

The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing, offered to those who are facing serious illness, advanced age, or upcoming surgery. It is a powerful reminder of God’s compassion, bringing peace, strength, and hope to those in need. Through this sacrament, the Church reaches out to support and comfort those who are suffering, inviting Christ’s healing presence into their lives.

What is the Anointing of the Sick?

The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of grace that strengthens the faith and spirit of those experiencing physical, emotional, or mental suffering. During this sacrament, the priest anoints the individual with blessed oil and prays for their healing. This sacrament is not only for physical healing; it also offers spiritual comfort, helping the individual trust in God’s love and mercy.

The sacrament may be received more than once and can be administered whenever a person’s health condition becomes serious or worsens. It is particularly appropriate before surgery or when one’s health is weakened by age.

Who Can Receive This Sacrament?

The Anointing of the Sick is available to:

  1. Those suffering from serious illness: This includes physical, emotional, or mental illness that significantly impacts daily life.

  2. The elderly: As we age, our physical and mental health may decline, and this sacrament can provide support and peace in times of struggle.

  3. Those undergoing major surgery: The sacrament can be a source of strength and calm for those preparing for significant medical procedures.

If you or a loved one is in need of the sacrament, please reach out to our Parish office. A priest can visit in person, either at home, in the hospital, or at a care facility, to provide this sacred rite.

What to Expect During Anointing of the Sick

  1. Greeting and Prayer: The priest begins with a greeting and a prayer, inviting the presence of the Holy Spirit.

  2. Reading from Scripture: A short passage from the Bible is read to provide comfort and encourage trust in God’s care.

  3. Laying on of Hands: The priest lays hands on the person receiving the sacrament, a gesture of blessing and prayer for healing.

  4. Anointing with Oil: The priest anoints the person’s forehead and hands with holy oil, symbolizing the healing touch of Christ.

  5. Final Prayer and Blessing: The sacrament concludes with a prayer and blessing, asking for God’s strength, peace, and healing grace.

The sacrament is gentle and peaceful, providing reassurance to those who may feel anxious, afraid, or weak.

The Healing Power of the Sacrament

While Anointing of the Sick does not always bring physical healing, it is a source of profound spiritual healing. Many people find peace, strength, and courage through this sacrament, as it renews their trust in God’s presence and love. This sacrament helps individuals face their struggles with greater faith, knowing that they are not alone.

As James wrote in Scripture, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)

  • What if one parent isn’t Catholic?
We warmly welcome families from all backgrounds. At least one parent should be committed to raising the child in the Catholic faith.
  • How many godparents can we choose?
The Church requires at least one Godparent but it is common to have two – one male and one female. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, confirmed and at least 16 years old. Additional friends or family members who are baptized Christians can act as honorary godparents or "witnesses".
  • Is there a cost for Baptism?
There is no fee for receiving Baptism. It is normal for the priest to be offered a donation (“stipend”) and our Parish asks for a contribution towards expenses. However, no-one will be prevented from receiving Baptism for financial reasons.
